Martial Artist & Sifu Feats

Long time readers of the Sterling Vermin Adventuring Co. will remember that the very first draft of the Pugilist did not have subclasses but, instead, got access to a selection of different unarmed fighting styles. Each of these styles was associated with a “stance” and a “signature move”. Stances provided ongoing benefits while you remained in them and allowed you to spend moxie to activate signature moves. Ultimately this design concept did not survive past the first draft of the Pugilist class but it wasn’t a terrible idea (just not a great replacement for traditional subclasses).

Today we resurrect this concept but in the form of a series of feats instead. Using these feats it’s easy to include martial arts and unarmed fighting as broader concepts in your games beyond the monk and pugilist classes. I highly encourage you to come up with your own campaign specific martial arts styles if you incorporate these feats in your campaign and, if you do, I hope that you’ll share them here!

The original Martial Artist & Sifu Feats document was removed and replaced with the new revised document with better balanced martial arts styles. Enjoy!

Revised Martial Artist & Sifu Feats

Yesterday Patreon backers got access to a new subclass for monk, the Way of Internal Alchemy. Practitioners of the Way of Internal Alchemy learn that dynamic and opposing forces flow throughout the multiverse. Rather than attempt to control these forces in the multiverse, these monks learn to manipulate the energies in their own body with the understanding that control of one’s self is essential to control of one’s surroundings. You can get access to the Way of Internal Alchemy (and all previous backer exclusives!) by pledging $1 or more to the Sterling Vermin Adventuring Co. Patreon account.

Finally, the Sterling Vermin Adventuring Co. will take a one week hiatus next week while I wrap up design and rewrites on the Pugilist class. So you don’t get your hopes up too high we will still be waiting on art when the blog resumes in two weeks so the final Pugilist will next be the next post!

    1. There is actually a subtle difference! By being in the stance just taking the Dodge action allows you to make an unarmed strike. Additionally, while in the stance, you can use a bonus action to make an unarmed strike if you took the Dodge action that turn.

  1. Have you don’t a significant overhaul to the Monk? There seems to be some overlap. There’s a heavy reliance on Bonus Actions which are a pretty expensive resource for the Monk. I’d expect these to work best for a Monk, and be okay for everyone else. Similar to Martial Adept.
